Whether you are starting your first container herb garden or deepening your knowledge of ancestral growing traditions, our courses meet you where you are. Every module is designed for real people growing in real small spaces — balconies, patios, fire escapes, and kitchen counters.
Our instructors are paid for their expertise, not thanked for their time. That is not a small distinction. It is a values statement.
Elder Track — The Apartment Homestead
Taught by paid elder consultants who carry living agricultural knowledge from the communities our seed collections represent. Not academic knowledge. Practiced, generational, embodied knowledge — the kind passed hand to hand, season to season, across a lifetime of growing.
You will learn planting methods your community has always used, companion growing techniques passed down through generations, the seeds worth saving and why, and the cultural rhythms that govern when and how things grow. This is not a gardening course. It is a reclamation.

Master Gardener Track — The Apartment Homestead
Taught by certified Master Gardeners trained through Washington State University Extension. The science behind every grow — soil composition, light cycles, container selection, root health, pest identification, and harvest timing — so you never have to guess again.
This track also covers the question every urban grower asks first: which setup is right for my space? Windowsill pods for indoor herbs. Fabric grow bags for balcony crops. The light guide for apartments without enough sun. Every decision explained.

The knowledge did not disappear. It is waiting to be reclaimed. That is what we are here for.

We believe that. Not as a tagline — as a commitment written into the legal structure of how Hearth & Pane operates.
Ancestral Rows is our sister nonprofit, incorporated in Washington State. Its purpose is to remove the cost barrier between food-desert families and their ancestral growing knowledge — so heritage is never a matter of what you can afford. The agreement between our two organizations is signed: Hearth & Pane builds and teaches the courses, and Ancestral Rows funds free access to them.
When Ancestral Rows opens, it will work through trusted community partners to put free seed kits and free course access into the hands of families who need them. The same Elder Track. The same Master Gardener Track. The same lifetime access. No lesser version, no lengthy applications, no proof required.
